Developer Frogwares’ investigative horror title The Sinking City received a surprise Xbox Series X and S version yesterday, but while this fresh release is certainly exciting, there’s some bad news attached to it. Frogwares has issued a statement confirming that owners of the game on Xbox One will not be eligible to upgrade their existing version to the Series X and S iteration, citing a technical situation based around publishing and rights.

Some of you have been asking about a platform upgrade for the game from the last-gen versions, however this is sadly not possible at the moment.

The Sinking City on previous and current generation of consoles have different IDs and different publishers on record. On Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, Frogwares is the developer and publisher of the title. So, due to the ongoing legal and technical situation, this game is currently not eligible for a platform upgrade.

This is no doubt a major blow to those who have upgraded to Microsoft’s newest hardware and would like to take advantage of The Sinking City‘s massive next-gen improvements, which include 4K/60FPS support, enhanced graphics, improved load times, and brand new quests via a DLC drop that can be purchased separately. That’s a lot to miss out on as an early adopter of an Xbox Series console, so here’s to hoping things get fixed up pretty soon to allow for upgrades – just don’t hold your breath.

In the meantime, The Sinking City can be purchased on Xbox Series X and S for $49.99, or you can snag the Deluxe Edition for $64.99. The game remains available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC as well.

Billy will always claim he didn't intentionally get the platinum trophy in Snoopy's Grand Adventure, but he's lying.
