The ultra-challenging Contra franchise played a huge part in the childhoods of many retro gamers, but though the series has continued in the many years since the launch of the first game in 1987, it has struggled to maintain the same relevance as gaming has moved ever onward. The majority of games released in recent years have received largely mixed to negative reception from critics and players, leaving little in the way of hope for long-term fans that there would ever be a return to glory in Contra‘s future.

Though this doesn’t bode well for Contra Returns, which is set to launch exclusively on iOS and Android next Monday, there may be a glimmer of that long-lost hope yet. This joint effort from Konami and Tencent is a free-to-play experience that saw a successful launch in China back in 2017, prompting the team to begin rolling the title out to more territories. The positive reception and Tencent’s faith in the game may well lighten the mood for some fans who have been patiently sitting by with their fingers crossed.

Contra Returns features the series’ two iconic macho men, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, among other popular characters in another run-and-gun alien-slaughtering adventure. With over 200 levels to conquer, fresh storylines to tune into, and a One Life Mode for the most diehard difficulty-enthusiasts. Even more, the game will launch with 1v1 and 3v3 competitive modes that are sure to get you and your pals into some friendly arguments.

Considering it’s free and was well-received in other territories, this one is shaping up to be โ€“ at the very least โ€“ an inoffensive release in the franchise. You can pre-register for the game now for some extra in-game rewards before it hits iOS and Android next Monday, July 26.

Billy will always claim he didn't intentionally get the platinum trophy in Snoopy's Grand Adventure, but he's lying.
