It has been a long wait but the team at Genesis Gaming has confirmed that Genesis 8 is all set for 2022 and it will return to San Jose.

Genesis 8 will take place from January 28th to January 30th at the San Jose Convention Center and the San Jose Civic Center (located in the center of Downtown). The main event will take place at the convention center on Friday and Saturday while the final matches will take place at the civic center on Sunday.

Registration has opened and has already attracted almost 1000 people within the first three hours of the announcement. Passes for the weekend (currently at early bird rates), 1-Day passes, and the final event are currently on sale. Those who register at the early bird rate will receive a free t-shirt along with a wristband. Early bird rates will end on July 26th while the price of admission will also go up on December 6th.

The hotel block has also opened for the San Jose Hilton with rates starting at $159 a night. While not confirmed, it could be speculated that other hotel options might become available through Genesis should the Hilton be fully booked. Those who miss their chance to book a room might have to wait for other hotels to be added or book outside the block.

Genesis 8 will feature a tournament with the main titles along with a selection side games. While the main games along with the sign-up fees have been confirmed, the side games will be announced in the coming months. The main games for the event are:

  • Super Smash Bros Ultimate
  • Super Smash Bros Melee
  • Super Smash Bros (N64)
  • Rivals of Aether

Information about additional events, special guests, and other activities during the weekend will be announced in the future. Guest should also keep a lookout for Genesis related events that are not connected to the actual tournament (like meetups and after parties). Application for vendors, artists, and volunteers will also open in the coming months.

Since this is an early 2022 event, COVID-19 safety guidelines are still in the works and will be based on the state of the pandemic. Having reached out to Genesis Gaming, they have stated that they are working on a safety guide that will become available in the coming months. As of July 19th, 63.3% of California’s population has received their first does while most restrictions have been lifted.

Hosted and organized by Genesis Gaming, it’s one of the largest grassroots organized Super Smash Bros. tournaments. Genesis has attracted over 5,0000 attendees along with competitors from around the country. This will be the eighth event and the first one to take place in San Jose since 2017. The tournaments had been hosted in San Jose until the 2018 event, in which it was moved to Oakland.
