It wasn’t very long ago when Toby Fox was sharing the first look at Deltarune Chapter 2 during a stream celebrating the 6th anniversary of Undertale. But remember, Deltarune isn’t a true sequel to Undertale.

Instead, Toby Fox has playfully but officially maintained that Deltarune is “just a game you can play after you complete Undertale, if you want to.” Fans may still find connections between Undertale and Deltarune as they play through the episodes, but it may be some time until more is ready.

Deltarune Chapter 2 Out Now

Toby Fox provided a new update on the future of Deltarune, including Chapters 3/4/5. In the statement, Fox shared how Chapter 2 was initially going to be released as a paid piece of content. He decided to make it free for everyone though because of how tough everything has been in recent times.

Later in the statement, Fox states he had originally planned to release the Deltarune chapters all at once. He changed his mind however after he considered how hard it can be for creators and fans to wait in between releases. Toby Fox’s next goal though is “to complete Chapters 3, 4, and 5 for next time.” While he isn’t sure when Chapters 3/4/5 will be completed, they will be released all at once and as a paid piece of content. Fox stated he doesn’t know the price yet but that “it’s definitely going to cost more than Undertale.”

The full September 2021 update is worth a read but the beginning should be read by everyone. Toby Fox made it a point to highlight how difficult it can be for indie developers and asked that people consider supporting them with the money they would have spent on Deltarune Chapter 2.

“Hi everyone.

The world has been really tough for everybody recently.

So I decided to release DELTARUNE Chapter 2 for free.

I guess like a pet cat that drops bugs at your doorstep,

I can, with some pride, show you the weird things I’ve been doing.

I’m not sure if it will help, but I hope so.

(Just one request – please remember, games like this aren’t normally free. If you can afford it, spend the money you saved from getting this game for free by supporting other indie devs.

If you really want to give me money, buy the soundtrack from Bandcamp. Thank you.)”

Chapters 3/4/5 Will Cost More Than Undertale

If you haven’t experienced Deltarune Chapter 1 yet, it is available on itch.io, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. It’s free on all platforms, including consoles.

Deltarune Chapter 2 is currently only available on itch.io. The latest Deltarune chapter has enjoyed a lot of success, with the title even crashing itch.io’s website for a few minutes until it was fixed.

And while Toby Fox has made sure to point out Undertale and Deltarune are separate experiences, it could be some time until Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are completed. It might be a good time to play the former if you haven’t yet. It’s been long enough since Undertale’s release that newcomers will no doubt discover it through Fox’s latest work.

Undertale is available on nearly everything, including PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. As of writing, Undertale is available in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for console and PC players. And don’t spend any time researching Undertale’s world or story; it’s a game best experienced by just falling right in.
