Way Back When

After reaching new heights of success with 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, it was a no brainer that Naughty Dog would follow the hit up with an even more bombastic sequel. And that’s exactly what happened in 2009 when the studio released Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for PlayStation 3. The first game may have introduced the world to treasure hunter Nathan Drake, but it was Among Thieves that cemented Uncharted as a household name.

Among Thieves was bigger and bolder than its predecessor in nearly every imaginable way – more impressive set pieces, higher quality graphics, a deeper story, and a brand new multiplayer component. The latter featured some fun online competitive modes, from the usual deathmatch showdowns to unique takes on other classic game types. But as enjoyable as going online could be, Among Thieves proved once again that Naughty Dog was the king of blockbuster gaming, as the breathtaking campaign elevated the series to exceptional new heights.

Among Thieves took players to some of the most gorgeous locations ever seen in a game at that time, and it provided some of the most memorable moments from any third-person shooter title – many of which are still talked about today. Whether it was the game’s opening section that saw Drake climbing his way up a train that had crashed over the side of a mountain, or perhaps a heart-pounding sequence that saw him having a firefight as he jumped between fast-moving trucks on the side of a snowy mountain – there was simply no shortage of immaculately designed action to experience.

While its predecessor was a fairly big hit, Among Thieves quickly found itself winning nearly ever Game of the Year award in 2009 and even landing on many gamers’ lists of best games ever made. It was a commercial success, too, selling over 6 million copies, unsurprisingly earning itself another sequel in 2011 called Uncharted: Drake’s Deception. And though the third game and its follow-ups may have upped the ante in many ways, most fans agree that no other game in the long-running series has come close to replicating the magic of Drake’s second expedition.

Where You Can Play It Now

The only way you can play Among Thieves on modern hardware is on PlayStation 4 via Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, which includes remasters of all three PS3 entries. These updated versions feature better visuals and a new photo mode, but they’re more or less identical to the originals. Do keep in mind, however, that the collection doesn’t include any of the multiplayer components from the older releases.

Here are the modern platforms on which you can access Uncharted 2: Among Thieves:

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5

Luckily, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection also includes the two games from the PS3 entries trilogy, making it exceptionally easy to catch up on all of Drake’s earlier adventures before you start looking into his PS4 outings.

Billy will always claim he didn't intentionally get the platinum trophy in Snoopy's Grand Adventure, but he's lying.
