There was an era when one score attack racing game rose to prominence and set the world ablaze with its frenetic gameplay and memorable punk rock soundtrack. That game, of course, was Hitmaker’s Crazy Taxi, which began its life as an arcade game before being ported to the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and then subsequently finding its way to nearly every other major platform in the years since. And though the game spawned a plethora of sequels, we haven’t heard anything about a new Crazy Taxi entry in quite a long while. But those with fond memories of the series will be happy to hear there’s a new game in town, and it has been making a splash all week.
Taxi Chaos, which launched on February 23, wears its Crazy Taxi influence proudly. It sports the same general gameplay mechanics of racing around a city picking up customers and rapidly getting them to their destinations, and it even shares similar aesthetics to the original wild and wacky taxi game. Yet while Taxi Chaos is aiming to recapture everything fans loved about Hitmaker’s inventive series, developer GS2 Games is happy to be making a name for itself as a new and innovative experience in the genre. In a statement, Lead Game Designer Jorden Stocx echoed this sentiment, saying:
Of course, this is not a direct sequel to the classics, however, we hope that players will welcome Taxi Chaos as a fun and fresh take on this long-lost genre.
Taxi Chaos provides players with plenty to do in its fictional city of New Yellow City across three unique modes – Arcade, Freeroam, and Pro – that will give everyone an experience tailored to their skill level and interests. You can always keep things casual and just drift, jump, and drive around the city picking up your willing passengers, or you can compete in online leaderboards and see who takes the top spot as the best driver in town. There’s no shortage of content to get into in Taxi Chaos, and the enthusiasm from fans has convinced the development team to add even more content to the game, starting with the day one patch that already adds plenty to the game.
Reception for Taxi Chaos has been mixed so far, with most criticisms being aimed at the game’s simplistic nature, but many fans of the genre have nevertheless found themselves enjoying the nostalgic formula. If you want in on the fun, you can get chaotic with the game right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch for $29.99. It’s also playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X via backwards compatibility.
