Considering the stigma surrounding clowns in the past few decades, relegating them more to the world of horror than their original intention of bringing joy, you might be surprised to hear that someone would try to make a happy game about a clown. But that’s exactly what developer Cloud M1’s upcoming game is setting out to achieve – joy, wonder, and a sense of magic.

Indeed, their kickstarter-funded platformer Ayo the Clown looks like an adorable mixture of Yoshi’s Island and Candy Crush Saga, blending together a colorful and vibrant aesthetic with traditional platforming mechanics on the titular hero’s journey to find his lost dog, Bo. The team has promised plenty of unique levels set across wildly varying worlds, such as rolling hills, a land of candy, and a strange water area.

Ayo will have access to various tools along his journey, including hammers and water balloons to help him tackle the enemies that stand in his way. But in a much more surprising twist, he’ll also be able to use dinosaurs, helicopters, and tanks to make quick work of everything. In other words, Ayo isn’t exactly clowning around on his quest to get Bo back, though collectibles come in the form of rubber chickens and fart bags, so there’s certainly no shortage of wackiness to go around.

Cloud M1 is no doubt attempting to capture what made old-school platformers so special, a sentiment echoed by Game Director Xiu Liang:

It’s been a dream come true creating video games so we’re very excited to bring Ayo the Clown to PC and Switch this year. We wanted to create a game that harks back to the platformers of yesteryear but with a modern day twist and fun artstyle to boot. We know you’ll fall in love with Ayo and his friends while having a great time on his wacky adventure.

Luckily, you won’t have to wait too terribly long to get your hands on this quirky little platformer. Ayo the Clown launches sometime this Spring for Nintendo Switch and PC. In the meantime, you can already add it to your wishlist on Steam.

Billy will always claim he didn't intentionally get the platinum trophy in Snoopy's Grand Adventure, but he's lying.
