Sonic the Hedgehog has been relatively absent since 2017’s Sonic Forces, but fans should be rest assured that the anthropomorphic animal has much more ahead of him. Here’s a breakdown of every piece of news we received during Sega’s Sonic Central event.

30th anniversary concert

There will be a free 30th-anniversary concert, celebrating the musical history of Sonic The Hedgehog. From the classics to newer tracks from Sonic Mania‘s “Studiopolis Zone,” we’ll be presented with a thrilling symphonic treat. In addition, a long-loved band in the Sonic fanbase Crush 40 will be performing. Composer and DJ Tomoya Ohtani, who helped score Unleashed, Generations, and more, will also be contributing. The video will go live on June 23 with a sneak peek being shown during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest.

Collaborations

Sonic will have a few strange crossovers in the coming months. First, he will be competing in the official Olympics video game as a skin. Like a mascot at a sports event, someone is under the costume, performing for a gold medal. It looks odd in comparison to the other humans on screen. The game will be out on June 22 on all major platforms, as well as Google Stadia.

Next, Sonic is going to be featured in his own crossover DLC in hospital simulator Two Point Hospital. You can have your characters dress up as Sonic, Tails, Rose, and Knuckles and utilize in-game items like statues and arcades. This free special pack can be played on July 30

Finally, a legal thriller/action game Lost Judgment will be featuring Sonic the Fighters in its in-game arcade. You’ll be able to duke it out as Sonic and the gang in this bizarre fighting game inside Lost Judgment itself! Previously, Judgment’s sibling series Yakuza had games like Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown and Outrun available to check out.

A Minecraft collaboration was teased at the end of the montage, but we have no details of what this crossover will entail.

Sonic colors: Ultimate edition

A Wii classic is returning on the Nintendo Switch, PC (via Epic Games Store), PS4, and Xbox One this year via a remaster. On PlayStation and Xbox systems, Sonic Colors Ultimate will feature enhanced visuals and a 4K resolution. It will also run at 60 frames per second as you’ll experience refined controls and according to the GameStop listing, “many more gameplay upgrades.” There will also be a new Rival Rush game mode that has you go to head-to-head with Metal Sonic; if you beat the records, you’ll win rewards. If you decide to preorder the game before its September 7, 2021 release, you’ll get a baby Sonic keychain based on the 2020 movie. There are two different editions. The first is the base game that costs $39.99. For just an extra $5, however, you’ll have, according to IGN:

  • Early access to the game
  • Exclusive music
  • Gold and silver wearables
  • Exclusive player icons
  • A Sonic movie boost whatever that entails

Sega says it will announce more information about Sonic Colors Ultimate over the coming weeks.

That’s not all the Sonic Colors love we received. The voice of Sonic The Hedgehog Roger Craig Smith revealed a new two-part animated series based on the game. It features gorgeous art and will be fully voiced by the cast of the games. It will debut this summer.

Sonic origins

This is the one for retro fans. While we didn’t get a reveal for Sonic Mania 2, we are still getting a modern collection for all the classic 2D Sonic games, including the first, second, third, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. As the rumors suggested, these games seem to be running on the same engine as Sonic Mania. Sonic Origins will have “added content and features” for seemingly all five games. More information will be given later this year. The Origins collection will release in 2022.

three sonic games are heading to playstation now

Sonic Mania PlayStation Now

Sonic Mania, Team Sonic Racing, and Sonic Forces are all making their way to streaming services PlayStation Now on June 1. The first two are worth checking out as Sonic Mania takes the best from the classic formula and reinvigorates it for a new age. Team Sonic Racing is a decent alternative to the Mario Kart series, featuring your favorite characters from Mobius. Sonic Forces, on the other hand, was ranked far less by the fanbase as it dumbed down the boost formula and lacked any semblance of difficulty.

Sonic mobile game news

Pirate versions of Sonic and Shadow are appearing in the mobile endless runner Sonic Dash, in addition to Super Sonic. The mobile version of Sonic Forces, meanwhile, will have an all-new private mode called Party Match, which lets you play with your friends; it will be implemented sometime this year. Sonic Unleashed‘s werehog will be coming to both games in October, just in time for Halloween.

If kart racers are more your drift, Sonic Racing on Apple Arcade will have you playing as a classic character playing in three all-new classic zones. New music will be included as well.

Sonic’s next console adventure was briefly teased at the end of the presentation. It gave very little details on what the game is about as we saw the blue hedgehog run through a forest. We did see some sort of digital energy surrounding Sonic as he was sprinting. The video, despite how little was shown, is still exciting as it gave us the news that this will be the first PS5 and Xbox Series X | S entry for Sonic. It will also arrive on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and the Nintendo Switch.
