After a period of “extended downtime”, Sony has made the decision to shut down the servers of for every LittleBigPlanet title on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.
This unfortunate news means that players will no longer be able to access the online features for LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet 3 (PS3), or LittleBigPlanet PS Vita. Thankfully for those who play LittleBigPlanet 3 on PlayStation 4, though, Sony has updated that version of the title, leaving one last avenue for avid fans to access the millions of community levels created across all of the PS3 games. The levels made on the PS Vita version, sadly, are lost forever.
Sony issued a full statement on Twitter, which you can view below:
Sony was forced to shut the servers down temporarily in May of this year due to an onslaught of DDOS attacks and hate-filled messages plastered throughout the games from hackers. Since every PS3 game shared the same servers, it resulted in all of them being shuttered ever since. This permanent closure indicates that either Sony was unable to fully recover from all of the attacks, or they perhaps just viewed this as a good excuse to end support for the games on legacy hardware. Either way, it’s a bummer.
That all being said, if you own any of these original games in the LittleBigPlanet series, you’re still able to play through the full story mode either solo or in local co-op, so there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be had with Sackboy and friends. Of course, the franchise appears to be heading in a new direction with the recent Sackboy: A Big Adventure, which eschews the 2D user-creation aspects of the previous titles in favor of a becoming a full-fledged 3D platformer.
