Following the success of Resident Evil 4 VR, another beloved PlayStation 2 title is coming to the Oculus Quest 2. During Facebook Connect 2021, it was announced that a VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is in the works.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will allow players to once again explore and wreak havoc in the state of San Andreas. Not much has been revealed but it has been confirmed that players will once again be able to venture around Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas, and the surrounding communities. More information about the game along with a release date will be made available in the future.

The announcement of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in VR has already been met with cheer from fans along with industry leaders and pioneers. Check out peoples reaction to the news on Twitter just to get an idea:

While the concept of a VR Grand Theft Auto is not new, this will be the first official VR adaptation. In the past, VR enthusiasts have been able to develop mods that would allow players to experience the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V using a VR headset (either the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift). Oculus Quest 2 being a PC-free headset, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will allow many to experience the iconic game in VR without a high-powered PC.

This is part of Facebook’s ongoing strategy of growing Oculus by bringing classic titles to the world of VR. In 2019; Respawn Entertainment unveiled Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, a reboot of the iconic series, during Oculus Connect 6. The game was released in 2020 and it was met with modest reviews while being praised by fans of the series. This was followed by the VR version of Resident Evil 4, which has been praised as one of the best games for the Oculus Quest 2.

The original Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was first released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004 followed by an Xbox and PC release in 2005. Players take on the role of CJ Johnson as he embarks on a journey to avenge his mothers’ death and restore the Grove Street Families to their former glory. The game was highly praised at launch and has been hailed as one of the best titles of the Sixth Generation era. It’s the best-selling game for the PlayStation 2 and the 27th best-selling game of all time.

The successor to Oculus Connect, Facebook Connect is an annual conference that highlights the work the company is doing with AR and VR technology. Among the highlights of the event are the major announcements and John Carmacks’ take on the industry.
