One of the best Xbox 360 indie titles ever has finally returned. I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1 was released in 2009 through Xbox’s indie creator program, known as Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG), which allowed smaller creators to publish their work on the Xbox 360 storefront. The service was shut down in 2017 after Microsoft decided against bringing the 3,000+ games to Xbox One and beyond.
I Made a Game with Zombies in It! has been dead and buried for years, only available to those that had previously purchased the game, and even then, it could only be played on Xbox 360 โ until now!
Online Multiplayer Coming in Free Update Later
The twin-stick zombie shooter has finally returned and this time it’s free. I Made a Game with Zombies in It! even has new features that were not available in the original Xbox 360 release. Online multiplayer, more bug fixes, and more will be added at a later unspecified date at no additional cost. The version available now has some great new additions for players in the meantime.
The Steam release now supports keyboard and mouse input and is also contained within a new engine. There’s also has a ‘Flashing Lights Reduction Mode’, which is an especially welcome change for those sensitive to such stimuli. The game originally had all kinds of lights that would dance around the screen, both randomly and in time with the music. It’s certainly a welcome change but especially from an accessibility standpoint. Now more people can play a game with zombies in it, and it’s a brain worth biting.
I Made a Game with Zombies in It! can be difficult but it’s also ridiculous. The concept is simple: you kill zombies while trying to stay alive. There’s also music playing that repeatedly tells you that someone made a game with zombies in it. It’s the best song and one I will never grow tired of. The game ends when you die or when the song is over, which is ten minutes long.
Waves of zombies will flood the screen and relentlessly chase you. Weapons, ammo, and power-ups will randomly appear on the screen, giving you fun and different ways to deal with the living dead. The level layout changes as well, which keeps things interesting. Your character dies if they’re touched by a zombie so keep moving and don’t stop shooting.
Designed entirely by James Silva, I Made a Game with Zombies in It! was intended to be “a $1 experience that delivers.” Silva wasn’t even expecting the game to be successful. He unknowingly created a meme and a game that’s perfectly preserved in its time with everything from its overuse of typographical errors to its use of leetspeak that gave it a voice.
It’s a game with Zombies in it
I Made a Game with Zombies in It! is an iconic title, deserving of both a re-release and your attention. And this time it doesn’t even cost a dollar! Don’t miss 2009’s top-selling Xbox Live Indie Game. Its simple premise and controls should keep you singing long after your brains are eaten by zombies or the song.
I Made a Game with Zombies in It! is available now on Steam and will be in my Game of the Year discussion. Don’t forget to download the titular track from the official Ska Studios website either. It’s an undead banger back from the dead.
