Dead Cells is set to receive yet another update and the announcement couldn’t have come at a better time. Developer Motion Twin just revealed Dead Cells has sold six million copies across all available platforms, and it’s probably about to sell a whole lot more when ‘The Queen and the Sea’ releases early next year. The latest update joins the dozens already added, giving players even more reasons to play one of the best Metroidvania titles ever made.

DEAD-TH of a Cells-man

‘The Queen and the Sea’ announcement comes as Motion Twin celebrates 20 years in the industry as well, which feels like a great way to celebrate for fans and the indie developer. The paid DLC is the largest update yet, bringing a variety of new content, including a new alternate end boss.

According to a press release, ‘The Queen and the Sea’ DLC will cost $4.99 USD. The added content includes two new biomes, including one that differs greatly from traditional Dead Cells areas, and an alternate end boss known as you guessed it, The Queen. Motion Twin revealed The Queen will be especially difficult to defeat but worthy players will be treated to a new, alternate ending.

‘The Infested Shipwreck’ introduces a ‘rotten shipwreck’ where players will be stalked and hunted through the dark corridors of the abandoned ship. It sounds spooky and I’m always excited for spooky content. ‘The Lighthouse’ continues with the cool and weird stuff by adding a rising tower to climb with flames that follow from below. Both sound intense but cardio in a lighthouse wins this round.

‘The Queen and the Sea’ will also bring “a lot more goodies” that should provide players with everything they need to persevere and push through. The DLC will equip players with “nine deadly new weapons”, along with an “evolving, summonable creature” that grows more powerful as it *checks notes* consumes your enemies. Yeah, that sounds great. It’s called a ‘Leghugger’ but it sounds like a cat. We’ll have to wait and see. (I hope it’s a cat).

There’s still plenty of time for new players to see what Dead Cells is all about before the new update, and it’s available on nearly everything, including mobile platforms. As of writing, Dead Cells can also be found within Xbox Game Pass, so subscribers can check it out before buying it.

‘The Queen and the Sea’ will be released on January 6th, 2022 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Dead Cells is also available for Android and iOS platforms but the trailer and press release made no mention of these versions when discussing the DLC release.

There’s also a bundle coming called ‘Road to the Sea’ that includes the base game and the DLC trilogy, which would be perfect for new players. It will cost $32.99, which is a savings of 50 percent when compared to the game and content purchased separately. Owners of the base game can purchase the DLC trilogy for $11.99. And yes, it is available on Nintendo Switch. Stop reading this and go play one of the best indie games ever made.
