Interplay has announced the original Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is getting an updated re-release on all modern consoles, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The surprise remaster is right around the corner, as it’s releasing on May 7, 2021. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is priced at $29.99, and a PC and mobile version are in the works for release later in 2021. The updated version still featured local co-op, as well as up to 4K visuals on Xbox and PS4 Pro.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance originally released on PlayStation 2 in 2001, then followed by a release on Xbox and Nintendo GameCube the following year. The game was developed by Snowblind Studio, which would go on to develop Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest and The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

Just like past games in the series, it’s based on the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons, in particular taking place on the Sword Coast and Western Heartlands. Unlike the previous Baldur’s Gate games, however, Dark Alliance was more of a hack-and-slash RPG that featured two-player co-op. There are three playable characters to choose from who each fill a specific class; the dwarven fighter Kromlech, the human archer Vahn, and the elven sorceress Adrianna. Despite the differences in class, each character has a host of skills and spells to use. There’s even an unlockable character, letting you play as the famous Forgotten Realms characters Drizzt Do’Urden once Extreme mode is completed.

Dark Alliance quickly became a cult classic with fans, mostly because of its phenomenal gameplay systems. However, the game also featured a dark and oppressive tone to its world and story that really sets it apart. A sequel, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2, released in 2004, this time developed by Black Isle Studios.

The re-release of the original game coincides with the impending launch of a brand new entry in the franchise Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, which releases on June 22 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Settled for being a writer, considering Gundam Pilot isn’t a real occupation.
