Following a lengthy period of rumors and leaks, Rockstar finally confirmed a Grand Theft Auto remaster trilogy last Friday.
The collection will combine three PlayStation 2 classics – Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – into a single package with a mouthful of a name: Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definition Edition. It’s uncertain at this point whether there are plans to sell any of the titles individually at launch or any point in the future.
Rockstar states that all three games will receive “across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements”, but they have also promised they’ll do so “while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals.” In other words, these updated classics won’t be full-blown remakes by any stretch, but the changes should still be more substantial than those of a standard remaster.
In a controversial move, Rockstar is removing digital versions of all three games from digital retailers this week. What purpose this serves beyond limiting consumer choice remains unclear, but it’s certainly not a good look for the prolific publisher. They have promised additional information about the new trilogy release in the coming weeks, so perhaps they’ll also make their actions a bit clearer then.
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, Nintendo Switch, and PC by the end of this year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III‘s PS2 release. In addition, iOS and Android editions are planned for sometime in 2022.
